Borussia Dortmund use Henrikh Mkhitaryan departure statement to troll Manchester United

Not bitter at all

Patrick McCarry

First Manchester City, now Manchester United.

Borussia Dortmund are not too enamoured with the Premier League rivals are two of their best attacking talents were lured to Manchester.

In the past month, Dortmund have been forced to sit back and watch as Ilkay Gundogan and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have packed up and left for lucrative English deals.

All they can do is thank the player, stress they wanted to keep them and aim a barbed statement at the big-spending usurpers. When Gundogan left, Dortmund stated:

‘The midfielder, who is currently suffering from a knee injury, will leave the eight-time German champions in the summer to join Manchester City, who finished fourth in the English Premier League last season.’

Dortmund were then the club to break Mkhitaryan’s departure although United may have, accidentally on purpose, already revealed the Armenian attacker would be their’s next season.

In announcing Mkhitaryan’s departure, this afternoon, Dortmund were quick to note where United finished up last season. They stated:

‘BVB has complied, after intensive discussions, with the wish of the Armenian national team member, to to join the team that finished fifth in England last season, Manchester United.’

Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke declared that selling the 27-year-old for a healthy fee [a reported £26m] made sense as Mkhitaryan could leave on a free transfer next summer.

The Germans then concluded their statement by wishing Mkhitaryan the best with United in the Premier League AND Europa League next season.
