Blackburn fans can’t quite believe their luck as Jack Byrne does his spectacular thing

Backing up the hype

After impressing in Holland, Jack Byrne is ready to take the Championship by storm and is happy to pay the EFL Cup (formerly the Capital One Cup) a trip on his way to the top.

The Irish midfielder was snapped up by Blackburn Rovers after parent club Manchester City made clear their intention to send one of their most exciting prospects out on loan for another season.

Byrne moved to Ewood Park this summer after spending the last 12 months in the Eredivisie with SC Cambuur and, despite being unable to keep Cambuur afloat in the Dutch top flight, Byrne’s signature remained hot property in the transfer window.

Blackburn boss Owen Coyle was delighted to get the 20-year-old on loan and already the youngster is repaying that faith.

Byrne played a starring role for Rovers in their 3-1 away victory over Mansfield Town on Tuesday night and while it was his fellow countrymen Anthony Stokes and Shane Duffy that got on the scoresheet, there was just one player’s name on the lips of supporters come the final whistle.

But Byrne was typically humble after the 90 minutes and just wanted to pay tribute to the hard work of his teammates, in particular that of Stokes.

Byrne was called up to the Republic of Ireland senior team to train in March and, if he’s not careful, Martin O’Neill will have no other option but to start picking him.
