The other was for his brother.

Bastian Schweinsteiger was only ever going to move to one club if and when he left Bayern Munich.

When the German midfielder found out that Manchester United were keen on bringing him to Old Trafford, his mind was made up.

We have already seen pictures proving the World Cup winner’s fondness for United, when he was growing up. Now, Schweinsteiger has revealed his interest in the club remained throughout his playing career.

Schweinsteiger, who made his United debut in a pre-season win over Club Americas, tells the club’s official website that a title push is possible next season.

He also spoke about a picture he posted, soon after his move to Manchester was confirmed, of him deep in discussion with former United player [now coach] Ryan Giggs.

Schweinsteiger said, ‘When we played two years ago, with Bayern [in the Champions League] against Manchester United at Old Trafford, at half-time I asked for his jersey for my brother because he is a huge fan.

‘But of course I saw him playing beforehand and then we finally played against each other. He is a legend of Manchester United.’

Another United midfield legend ranks even higher for the 30-year-old.

‘I have some players who I was always looking for,’ he commented, ‘to see how they were playing, and of course Paul Scholes was one of them.

‘I like his kind of style, how he played and it was also nice to see him once in Munich when there was an all-star game between Bayern Munich and Manchester United.

‘I took his shirt on that occasion but that one was for me! It is at my house in Munich.’
