Blyth Spartans were so close to being the talk of the FA Cup yesterday afternoon and U.S. President Barack Obama was quick to back them.
They’re used to playing in the seventh tier of English football but when they were faced with the daunting task of a tie with Championship side Birmingham City yesterday, they rose to the occasion.
Well almost.
They went 2-0 up to a side 120 places above them in a first half before being pegged back to lose 3-2 but their stellar effort did not go unnoticed by the most powerful man in the world, after Razor Ruddock of course.
Barack Obama gave the Spartans a follow on Twitter for their, well, Spartan performance, as did former Ballon D’Or winner Luis Figo.
