Arsenal fans aren’t happy as ground staff paint pitch markings blue ahead of Manchester City visit

Jack O'Toole

Arsenal fans have not taken kindly to a decision by the club’s grounds staff to paint the pitch markings blue ahead of Thursday’s visit of Manchester City.

Arsenal were trounced 3-0 by City in the League Cup final on Sunday which prompted fresh calls for the resignation of longtime manager Arsene Wenger.

The Gunners will now face City in the Premier League and the move to paint the pitch lines blue is designed to help the match officials and players pick out the lines in case there is significant snowfall during the game, however, Arsenal fans have taken a much more downtrodden view towards the decision.

Tottenham also painted their pitch’s markings blue at Wembley before their FA Cup fifth round replay against Rochdale, however, the lines had to be repainted a lighter shade to accommodate VAR, which, invariably, was a shambles.

Meanwhile Wenger defended his position as the club’s manager on Wednesday and indicated that only the powers that be could bring an end to his tenure at the club.

“I have been here for 21 years and I always respected my contract,” he said.

“In life, I look at what people do, not at what they say. If you want me not to be here, that’s a different problem. You ask me my commitment, and my attitude is dictated by what I did in my life, not by what I say in a press conference.”
