Angel di Maria accounts for almost one in 10 of every jersey sold with name on the back

Does this make Angel di Maria the most popular player in England?

Robert Redmond

Finally, some good news for Angel di Maria. Kind of…

It’s really just good news for Mike Ashley, because his Sports Direct company have revealed the most popular player Premier League name customers get on the back of their jersey, and the Manchester United player is, by a distance, the number one choice.

The retailers sell Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Liverpool, United, Manchester City, Tottenham and Newcastle jerseys and Di Maria is one of four United players to make the top ten. David De Gea’s number one shirt is the most popular choice for goalkeeper jerseys, misfiring Falcao is seventh, with Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie also popular choices.

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez is second and Chelsea’s Diego Costa is third, but there’s little between those from number three down. The figures are limited to just eight Premier League teams, but offer a clear indication of the excitement record signing Di Maria generated upon arrival last summer.

The Argentine cost €81 million last summer, and although he may not have repaid the club on the pitch, so far, his shirt sales might go a little way to doing so.
