Life has just got better for Andy Townsend fans
He never actually left, but was rather taking a break due ITV’s coverage of the Champions League being on hiatus as the competition took a winter break.
However, Twitter users were sent into despair today when Townsend showed up as a pundit on BT Sport’s FA Cup coverage. The former Republic of Ireland captain had hopped into his tactics truck and driven down to the Emirates to cover Arsenal v Middlesbrough in the FA Cup and should probably stay off social media as a result.
The Twittersphere had rejoiced last month when ITV decided to part ways with Townsend as their co-commentator when his contract expires in the summer and after losing the majority of their live football coverage.
But maybe everyone celebrated too soon, because Townsend is back in and around TV coverage today.
Their misery was topped off when it turned out Michael Owen was commentating on the match. BT are probably readying Robbie Savage as we speak to appear live on-air.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the return of Townsend at this level:

Michael Owen co-commentating, Andy Townsend as a pundit. The sooner BT Sport dies the better.

Andy Townsend having a pop at Ozil, it's like Danny Dyer telling Robert De Niro how to act.

BT Sport now have Robbie Savage, Andy Townsend, Michael Owen and Paul Scholes as pundits, and they charge me £15 a month for that privelige!

I wish BT Sport would show the games and nothing else. Their pre-amble is shockingly bad, and now they've got bloody Andy Townsend too

Tried to watch BT Sport, but Andy Townsend's voice reminds me too much of my neighbour's idiot child's trumpet practice.
