European football is about to lose another midfield maestro.
Xavi is heading off to Qatar while English legends Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have called time on their Premier League careers to get themselves some MLS action.
And it appears that Saturday’s Champions League final will be Andrea Pirlo’s last game on the European stage as he’s set to follow Lamps and Stevie G off to the U.S. of A.
Pirlo was rumoured to be on Brendan Rodgers’ wishlist as the Liverpool boss attempted to shore up the midfield after the departure of his captain but Reds fans will be gutted to learn that they won’t get the chance to see the suave Italian pull on their jersey.
Spanish newspaper AS report that Pirlo has “accepted” a proposal following a meeting with New York City FC CEO Ferran Soriano and, if the deal goes through, that means that the three designated players on the NYCFC roster will be Pirlo, Lampard and David Villa. (Not too shabby, eh?)
We’re still not sure if Manchester City who, along with New York City, fall under the City Football Group banner, will attempt to “pull a Lampard” by taking Pirlo to the Etihad for a period of time before sending him off to MLS.
Interesting times!
