We know, we know. ‘Best goal ever’ gets banded about a fair bit. But this is something really special.
AFC Portchester's Lee Wort scored an unbelievable goal this week in their FA Cup extra preliminary round replay win over Melksham Town, and the footage from behind the goal is sublime.
Picking the ball out of the air before turning his defender, Wort produced a stunning Ramona past the goalkeeper to send the crowd, and his teammates, into raptures. Take a look in the video at the top of the page.
The strike is reminiscent of a mixture of two of the most famous goals of all time.
The initial skill is a throwback to Dennis Bergkamp’s goal for Netherlands in the 1998 World Cup against Argentina in Marseille. We’ve thrown in the Dutch commentary below just to add to the viewing.
And the finish itself reminded us of Erik Lamela’s Rabona against Arsenal in 2021.
Take a bow, Lee Wort. If this doesn’t make the Puskas list for 2025, we riot.
