Adam Johnson has been sentenced to six years in prison.
The 28-year-old received his sentence at Bradford Crown Court on Thursday afternoon after being found guilty of sexual activity with a child
It emerged during sentencing that he had been stripped of his 12 England caps for his offences.
Sunderland terminated Johnson’s club contract on February 11 after the winger submitted his guilty pleas.
Earlier this month, Johnson was found guilty of one count of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl who, according to prosecutor Kate Blackwell QC, has since undergone treatment and counselling for depression.
Judge Jonathan Rose, after deciding that the crime fit into a ‘Category A’ type, said “you have no remorse because you still deny the most serious offence,” just moments before handing down the sentence.
“This will be your first prison sentence, this is all entirely your fault. There is an abuse of trust, you are trusted by young fans to behave properly.”
