A couple of likely lads dominate Manchester United’s end of season awards

‘Most  likely to join Real Madrid’?

Who would have thought, six months into their respective journeys at Manchester United, that David de Gea and Marouane Fellaini would be picking up a heap of fan awards.

The pair have swept the board after the club asked supporters to vote on some alternative awards from the recently completed season.

De Gea, who picked up the Players’ Player of the Year prize, was selected for performance of the season [the 3-0 home win over Liverpool] and, unsurprisingly, save of the season [the wonderful, diving effort against Everton at Old Trafford].

Fellaini, who endured a wretched first season at the club, won best comeback and best substitution of the season [his scoring impact, ff the bench, away to West Brom].

United fans voted the 2-1 win over Liverpool, at Anfield, as the most enjoyable away day of the season. Best game is the 4-2 home win over Manchester City.

Quote of the season was clinched by the irascible Louis van Gaal, with this gem:

When you analyse the game then we have twitched our ass on the bench. I said to my players I was squeezing my ass, but it was the wrong expression. I have twitched my ass on the bench because we were out of balance.

Defender Paddy McNair wins ‘Best Breakthrough’ while goal celebration of the season could only go to one man.
