Five darts for a place in the final, you’d think Michael van Gerwen would toss four in the bin.
That was breathless. It was exhausting. It was nerve-jangling, it was terrifying, it was an emotional rollercoaster.
A game you just could not believe. Rob Cross has set up a New Year’s Day final with Phil Taylor after beating the champion, the world number one, Michael van Gerwen in the most enthralling semi-final.
Cross, in his debut world championship, credited the Ally Pally crowd for the win, for getting on the Dutch man’s back, and it certainly played a part as the champ left out chances to win the game.
In the end, it went to an 11th leg tiebreaker and, when that couldn’t separate two titans playing a game on a different level, it went down to sudden death and, after one final miss for Michael van Gerwen, Rob Cross held his nerve.
On Monday, Cross – dubbed the new Phil Taylor – will face his favourite player – Phil Taylor – in what will be the Stoke man’s last ever game, in Cross’ first ever world championship final. A fairytale script, but it would take some beating this semi-final.
