Send this man to Rio.
Markus Rehm is making history. And, if he keeps going like this, he’ll own history.
The German amputee won gold at the IPC World Championships on Friday. Well and good. But he broke a record. He smashed a record. And he jumped a distance that would’ve seen him comfortably win gold at the last Olympics in London.
No wonder he has ambitions of competing against able-bodied athletes. At this rate, he could not only do it, but really shake things up.
Rehm jumped a ridiculous 8.40m in the long jump final. His closest competitor? He managed 6.69m.
Oscar Pistorious ran the 400m in the London Olympics and the matter of whether Rehm will be allowed to compete in Rio in 2016 will be discussed in the coming months. It looks like he’ll have a better chance than Pistorious too.
