British gymnast Louis Smith handed ban over appearance in video “mocking Islam”

Governing body British Gymnastics said they were left with no choice but to take action

Four-time Olympic medal-winning gymnast Louis Smith has been given a two-month suspension by British Gymnastics after he appeared to mock Islam in a video.

The video, which was leaked online last month, was filmed by Smith and also features retired gymnast Luke Carson.

In it, Carson seems to mock Islamic prayer practices while Smith laughs along.

Louis was quick to issue a statement following the video’s release; apologising for his ‘thoughtless actions’, the aftermath of which had taught him a ‘valuable life lesson’.

Carson was issued a reprimand, which will remain in effect for two years.

As well as being one of the most recognisable gymnasts in Britain, Smith also won BBC show Strictly Come Dancing in 2012.

Jane Allen, chief executive of British Gymnastics, acknowledged that both men had shown themselves to be regretful about the video’s content, but said the governing body was left with no choice but to take action.

“It is regrettable that following a historic summer of achievement, the organisation finds itself in this difficult position with two high profile members in breach of our standards of conduct,” she said.

“As the custodians of the integrity and values of the sport, we have had no choice but to act responsibly and refer this case to an independent Panel for their review and determination.

“Whilst both individuals showed remorse following the incident, we hope in the future they use their profile to have a positive impact on sport and communities.”
