Not a bad day’s work.
Arthur Lanigan-O’Keeffe won gold at the European Modern Pentathlon Championships today, becoming the first Irish pentathlete to win the prize, and assured his place at next summer’s Olympic Games.
The modern pentathlon is an Olympic sport featuring five disciplines; fencing, show jumping, 200 metre freestyle swimming, a 3200 metre cross country run and pistol shooting.
Lanigan-O’Keefe finished on 1,487, narrowly beating French rival Valentin Prades to gold by 11 points, and will now travel to his second Olympic Games, having featured at London 2012.

“It basically means the world to me,” the 23 year old Dubliner said after his victory.
“Our whole season has been focused on peaking at this one moment and we peaked at it so it gives me great confidence going into Rio.”
“I’ve now qualified for the Olympics, I’m the European Champion, it’s pretty much up there with the top days of my life. I am so delighted, it’s amazing.”
