Usain Bolt is still the fastest man alive.
The Jamaican has won his third consecutive 100m Olympic gold medal, recording a time of 9.80 in Rio.
Bolt qualified for the final with a time of 9.86, a season’s best achieved by what seemed like a light jog for the great man.
However, Bolt faced sterner competition in the final.
America’s Justin Gatlin, the 2004 Olympic champion, who served a four-year suspension between 2006 and 2010 after testing positive for testosterone, ran Bolt close, coming second with a time of 9.89. Canada’s Andre De Grasse was third with a time of 9.91.
True to form, Bolt, in lane six, was slow out of the blocks, with Gatlin, in lane four, in front after 50 metres. However, the 29-year-old put on a show for the Rio crowd in his last Olympics, motoring ahead of the field and beating his American rival to the title, his seventh Olympic gold medal.
Bolt won’t be back to defend his Olympic 100m gold in four years, but has ended this chapter of his incredible career in style.
