The Washington native played 10 seasons in the NFL.
Vontae Davis, a former NFL star and two-time Pro Bowl player, has died in Florida, aged just 35.
The former Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills cornerback was found unresponsive by his personal assistant in his Florida home. No cause of death has yet been announced. The investigating Davie Police Department has reportedly suggested no foul play is suspected.
Davis was a first round draft pick, back in 2009, and played with the Dolphins for three seasons before switching to the Colts. In February 2018, he joined the Buffalo Bills for $5 million ($3.5m guaranteed) but only played once for the franchise.
After being listed as a healthy scratch for their first game of the 2018 season, he removed himself from a game against the Los Angeles Chargers and declared, “I’m done.”
His actions, and a resulting statement that confirmed his retirement, left his coach, Sean McDermott, and teammates stunned:
Vontae Davis made it to two Pro Bowls
Back in 2012, Vontae Davis was traded from Miami to the Indianapolis Colts, with the entire trade tracked on the ‘Hard Knocks’ documentary. It showed how ruthless the pro game could be, and Davis took the news hard.
He responded by playing his best football with the Colts, reaching the AFC Championship with them in 2014. They were beaten there by eventual Super Bowl champions, the New England Patriots.
Reggie Wayne, a retired wide receiver and former Indianapolis teammate of Davis, stated, ‘Sad Day. It was a pleasure wearing the horseshoe with you homie. Rest easy champ.’
The Colts posted the following tribute on X (Twitter): ‘We are devastated to hear of Vontae Davis’s passing. He will be deeply missed, and we send our prayers to his family and loved ones. He was a standout player in his six seasons with the Horseshoe, but he was an even better team-mate who carried a smile and positive energy every day.’
The Dolphins posted, ‘We are heartbroken by the sudden passing of former Dolphins CB Vontae Davis and extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.’
