Jonas Gustavsson faced the two extremes of goalkeeping emotion as his Detroit Red Wings were beaten by New York Rangers last night at Madison Square Garden.
The Detroit goalie, who made 26 saves in the game, put on his best David Seaman impression as he seemed to almost reach back into the goal to claw out a shot when the score was 2-2.
It looked like Gustavsson was set for the performance of his life when he pulled off more heroics in overtime but Derick Brassard pounced on the rebound and fired home 1:50 into overtime to give the Rangers the win.

The heartbreaking injustice doesn’t end there though. Gustavsson’s string of world-class saves was so out-of-this-world/should-be-physically-impossible that he dislocated his shoulder to the extend that he has been ruled out for a number of weeks and the Red Wings have been forced to recall Petr Mrazek from the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins.
Coach Mike Babcock said last night: “He’ll probably be out a bit. I don’t know exactly until after our doctors see him but Mrazek will be recalled tomorrow after practice.”
