The Kansas City Royals have taken a 1-0 lead in the World Series, beating the New York Mets 5-4 after 14 innings – the longest first game in the history of baseball’s setpiece between the winners of the National and American Leagues.
The whole affair at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium took more than five hours, finally ended when Eric Hosmer hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field to score Alcides Escobar.
The game was delayed for more than five minutes in the fourth inning when Fox Sports lost coverage due to “a rare electronics failure” and play was halted. The broadcaster insisted the stop in play was because the backroom teams lost replay facilities, rather than to facilitate viewers at home.
The second game is tonight in Kansas as last year’s runners-up the Royals go in search of a first World Series since 1985, while the Mets have not claimed the title since 1986.
