The New England Patriots came from 10 behind to win one of the most memorable Superbowls in memory, after Malcolm Butler’s interception in the dying seconds sealed an incredible comeback.
MVP Tom Brady set a new record for Superbowl touchdown passes by reaching 13, with four on the night, as he and Bill Belicheck picked up their fourth Superbowl in 14 seasons.
It was a scoreless first quarter, with the Patriots coming closest to scoring, before Tom Brady was picked off by Jeremy Lane in the endzone.
Lane had a nasty fall after being tackled by Julian Edelman, and his night was over early.
Here’s an incredible photo of Lane’s misfortune. Gruesome to say the least.
Brady hit back in the second quarter though, and got the Pats off the mark when he connected with an 11-yard pass to Brandon LaFell for the game’s first touchdown.
The Seahawks pegged them back though, as Marshawn Lynch went into beast mode to bulldoze his way over the line, to level it up at 7-7, with just over two minutes to play in the first half.
It looked like we’d be level at the half, but the Pats stormed back up the field, before Tom Brady floated a beautiful 22-yard pass to Rob Gronkowski, who plucked the ball from the sky for a touchdown that looked like giving them a 14-7 halftime lead.
However, a lot can happen in an NFL minute, and the Seahawks found themselves in the Pats’ redzone with just six seconds to play. Instead of knocking over the routine field goal to reduce the gap, Pete Carroll showed his balls of steel by going for broke, and it worked. Russell Wilson found Chris Matthews open, and the sides trotted in for tea and orange slices all level.
Steven Hauschka kicked a field goal early in the second half to give Seattle their first lead of the game, before Bobby Wagner brilliantly picked off Tom Brady for the quarterback’s second interception of the night.
The Seahawks then turned the screw, and a few plays later, Wilson found Doug Baldwin wide open in the endzone, the touchdown stretching their lead out to 10 points.
With just under eight minutes to go, however, the Pats gave roared back into the game, as Brady found Danny Amendola for a 4-yard touchdown, to leave just three between the sides. That was Brady’s 12th TD pass in Superbowls, setting a new record.
And Brady had his 13th Superbowl TD pass with just two minutes to play when popped one to Julian Edelman, putting the Brady within touching distance of his fourth Lombardi trophy.
But there was still plenty of drama left. With second remaining, the Seahawks had marched down to the Patriots one yard line, but in an absolute fairy tale ending, the Pats’ great comeback was sealed when Malcolm Butler intercepted Russell Wilson.
That’s sport.
And breathe.
