Steven Gerrard: ‘I have had a chat with Klopp… Liverpool are keen for me to come back’

The former Reds captain says he is likely to retire at the end of 2016.

Steven Gerrard can see the end. He can also see the beginning. Now with LA Galaxy, Gerrard will finish out his contract with the MLS side at the end of next season. During the American mid-season break, the midfielder returned to Liverpool to keep up his fitness and, while he was there, to discuss future roles at the club. In an interview with Liverpool Echo, Gerrard has revealed Liverpool have expressed an interest in him coming back to the club in a coaching capacity. He stated:

"I have had a chat with [Jurgen] Klopp. "I haven’t had an offer as such, but the club have let me know they are keen for me to come back. "There hasn’t been a conversation where they have said: ‘we want you to do this, we want you to do that’. But they have welcomed me back in."

Gerrard says he will be 75% into his coaching badges when he returns from the United States in November of this year. He is still contracted to do punditry work with BT Sport but stresses he will seek out coaching experience with another club if Liverpool do not firm up their interest. The 35-year-old expects his next season of football to be his last. Gerrard said, "I’m not 100% sure but I think it will probably be my last year as a player. "It’s a bit scary because I love playing. If I didn’t still love it I would probably call it a day now."
