Welsh winger Shane Williams mulling rugby return to local team where it all began

Good luck to his strictly amateur opponents

Division One West of Welsh club rugby could get a whole lot more interesting.

Welsh wing legend Shane Williams could be joining his brother, Dean, in the backline of local side Amman United.

The 91-times capped Welsh and Lions international played his last game in Japanese rugby, in January. It was his final posting as a rugby pro but Williams, scorer of 60 Test tries, is eager to fulfil a promise he made over a decade ago.

According to the South Wales Evening Post, the former World Player of the Year is thought to have spoken to club chiefs about a return to the field.

He began his career with Amman before he was spotted by Neath coach Lyn Jones. The Gnoll-based club joined with Ospreys upon the creation of the Celtic League [now Guinness PRO12].

Amman’s backs coach Tony Williams says, ‘He has been in touch and, hopefully, he will play some games this season.’
