WATCH: Shane Jennings bravely speaks about dread of rugby retirement

Uncertain future

Patrick McCarry

Leinster Rugby would not be the successful side they are today with men like Shane Jennings and Leo Cullen.

The Ireland flanker returned from Leicester Tigers to Leinster in 2007 and is credited, by the likes of Brian O’Driscoll and Jamie Heaslip, as being pivotal in adding steel to the province.

Jennings’ return coincided with league wins and Heineken Cup triumphs. Ireland caps were the added bonus but Jennings poured everything into his endeavours with Leinster.

Having retired at the end of the 2014/15 season, Jennings is now making his way in a world away from rugby. However, he keeps well in with the sport and is a regular rugby pundit.

In a fantastic ‘Tackle Your Feelings’ video, released by the Irish Rugby Union Players Association, Jennings bravely opens up about taking those first teetering steps away from a sport that consumed is whole life.

“When I faced retirement from professional rugby I felt a lot of apprehension and uncertainty,” he admits.

The video follows on from the campaign’s launch, last season, that featured Jack McGrath and Ireland Women’s star Hannah Tyrell.
