Munster have a serious signing on their hands.
It was no surprise that Rassie Erasmus looked to bolster his second-row options after the disappointing news that both Jean Kleyn and Dave Foley have been ruled out for the rest of the season.
With the southern province well in the hunt to secure silverware over the next two months, it would probably not be the wisest decision to throw in the likes of Fineen Wycherley, Darren O’Shea or John Madigan into the hotbed of the highest level of club rugby.
Toulouse come to Thomond Park in less than two weeks so it is a clever move to bring in someone of Jean Deysel’s ilk to help bolster the options available to Erasmus and his management team.
Deysel can play in both the second-row and back-row, so his versatility will be a huge plus.
It also helps that the guy is an absolute monster.
Deysel is an extremely powerful ball carrier and if you do a quick search of his highlight reels on YouTube, you will notice that most of his best moments feature him running over unlucky defenders.
It was during one of these searches that we spotted Deysel representing the emerging Springboks in a match against the British and Irish Lions in 2009.
Deysel was playing at openside that day as he helped his side claim a 13-13 draw against Ian McGeechan’s Lions.
Some of the former Munster players representing the Lions will undoubtedly remember the name Deysel when it was announced last week that he had signed on a short-term deal.
Both John Hayes and Ronan O’Gara were on the receiving end of all of the South African’s brute force in that game.
Hayes…
And ROG.
Ouch.
If Deysel can bring this kind of pain over the next couple of weeks then Munster fans will have a new South African to admire.
