Vine: Ulster hold on to beat Connacht but not before embarrassing Rory McIlroy

Poor Rory!

Ben Kiely

Ulster ended the year on a winning note by just about edging Connacht to claim a 13-10 victory

A pair of Jackson penalties and a try from Craig Gilroy were enough to give the Northern province the win. However, a late try from Muldowny made it a nervy closing few minutes for Ulster, but they showed good strength to hold on in what was admittedly, a lacklustre match.

By far the highlight of the game didn’t actually happen on the field at all. World number one Rory McIlroy was in attendance at the Kingspan Stadium. The Down native also kindly brought the Claret Jug trophy for winning the Open to show the Ulster faithful.

However, whoever was controlling the PA system at the game played a cruel joke on the golfer. When McIlroy was conducting an interview at the side of the pitch, the jokester thought it would be a hilarious idea to boom the song “Sweet Caroline” through the stadium’s sound system. This was, of course, a reference to Caroline Wozniacki, the tennis player who McIlroy was engaged to marry until the couple broke up earlier this year (and has found incredibly form on the golf course since doing so).

McIlroy took the prank well, although you could tell he was a little embarrassed by the situation.
