Video: Munster’s players are fed like absolute kings in their pre-game meals

I'm very, very hungry

Neil Treacy

Ever wondered what a professional rugby team eat before a big game?

Well Munster rugby’s nutritionist Catherine Norton has been showing us around the team-room on a typical gameday for the side, and the selection of grub available to the players has us absolutely salivating.

We had pretty much assumed that the players were handed a big plate of chicken and rice before the game, but the reality couldn’t be further from that.

For protein, the players get a choice of either salmon, chicken stirfry or turkey burgers (which she says are the most popular).

They can then add stirfried veg, mixed veg, or beans to their meal, before choosing from pasta, rice, mashed potatoes or sweet potato wedges for carbs.

And on top of that, they can indulge their sweet toooth for dessert, with some pancakes, low-fat ice cream and fruit.

However, Norton says some players don’t feel up to a big meal before a game, so they also have soups, scrambled eggs, a selection of breads, cold meats, cheeses, jams, cereals and yoghurts available, as well as tea, coffee, juice and heaps of water to drink.

They’re a well looked-after bunch.
