The Welsh captain on croc rolls, threat focus and winning the shoulder battle

One of the modern breakdown maestros on the best ways to clear out rucks

Wales captain Sam Warburton delivered a great insight into the world of breakdowns and ruck-clearing on BT Sport’s Rugby Tonight. The flanker is renowned for his immense strength in the area and offered tips on three ways to attack opposition rucks.

As Warburton explained, in international rugby players often get between 10 and 15 jackal (ball-stealing) attempts. Players, he noted, are often busier securing their own ball or clearing out rucks.

The masterclass covered techniques such as the croc (crocodile) roll, adopting a ball or threat focus and winning the shoulder battle. Our favourite quote is, ‘There, you’ve got no other option rather than to blast him out of the way.’
