Connacht and Ireland rugby legend Ciaran Fitzgerald was recently inducted into the Connacht Clan Hall of Fame and regaled fans at The Sportsground with tales about the old-school amateur days.

The hooker, who captained the Lions in 1983, has some great stories about training under a single floodlight – ‘a light on a pole’ – in Athlone, stopping for Chinese take-away in Enfield and famous battles with Munster.

Fitzgerald joked, ‘When Munster beat the All Blacks in 1978, there was a lot of yahoo about how they were the world champions because they had beat the world champions. Well, the next match they had was up at The Sportsground and we beat them, so… !’
