The New Zealander had to work hard to grind out the decision victory in his professional debut

The 30-year-old won his heavyweight bout on the undercard of the Footy Show Fight Night. The All-Black looked extremely impressive to earn a unanimous decision against Rhys Sullivan.

The flanker pummeled the Aussie over three rounds and was unlucky not to earn a TKO against the brawler, who has yet to register a win inside the ring. Sullivan had been stopped in every single one of his bouts prior to this one, but the 21-year-0ld managed to remain conscious until the final bell against the Kiwi.

Messam has made 40 appearances for the New Zealand rugby union side, scoring six tries for his country. He also has two Olympic gold medals for Rugby 7’s and can now add a pro boxing win to his impressive sporting resume.

His stellar debut will encourage him to follow Sonny Bill Williams’ lead and try to maintain a boxing career as well as continue playing as a professional rugby player. Williams’ actually fought and won his bout in the main event at the Footy Show Fight Night.
