Ulster humbled in Toulon and Paddy Jackson is stretchered off with a dislocated elbow

38-point defeat for Irish province

Conan Doherty

A bonus point for Ulster but they must also take home a worrying injury to Paddy Jackson and a downright spanking.

60-22.

Neil Doak’s side might well have been weakened but the 38-point margin of defeat in Toulon will sting as much as the loss of their fly half as the northerners return from the south of France with their heads bowed ahead of the final phase of the Pro 12.

One positive from this afternoon’s performance was the display of Mike McComish who finished the game with two tries, both coming from strong Ulster mauls in either half.

McComish was integral in setting up Paddy Jackson’s opening try for Doak’s men when the number 10 went over in the corner but, despite a spirited first half, the visitors found themselves 27-10 down at the break.

Jackson left the field of play with a suspected dislocated elbow before half time and it got no better after the restart.

Delon Armitage led the way in the second period for Toulon with three tries of his own as the hosts ran up a 45-point margin at one stage but a late rally from an Ulster side who refused to just roll over saw two late tries and a bonus point placed in the bag.

Jared Payne and McComish went over for the away side but there was to be no getting away from the glaring misery of the losing margin.
