‘Thumbs up from the crowd.’
That thumbs up came from none other than Trevor Brennan, the former Leinster, Toulouse and Ireland star, as TV cameras panned to him, taking in a Top 14 schemozzle from the stands.
The retired forward’s son, Josh Brennan was playing at openside for Toulouse, at the weekend, against Castres. It ended up being a comfortable 33-6 win for the hosts but Castres, who have Jeremy Davidson on the sidelines for them, gave it a good crack for the opening 30 minutes, before it got away from them.
At one point, near the end of the first half, England international Jack Willis dipped in for a poach and scrumhalf Paul Graou ran off with the ball after the whistle had blown. The Stade Toulousain scrumhalf was unceremoniously dumped to the pitch by Fijian winger Josaia Raisuqe, sparking a mini melee that took a while to calm down.
Australian lock Richie Arnold rushed in to defend his teammate, Graou, and Josh Brennan was not far behind him. Brennan and Raisuqe made a beeline for each other and, as they did so, the TV cameras turned to Trevor Brennan, watching on. Comfortable that his son was acquitting himself well, the retired flanker gave the big thumbs up as the match officials sought to quell the dispute.
Son of Trevor Brennan could play Test rugby for France
Josh Brennan may follow his father, Trevor, into Test rugby but it will most likely be in a blue, rather than green, jersey.
The 22-year-old, who can cover second and back row, was born in France and made his international bow for their U20s in 2020. He made his senior Toulouse debut in December 2020 and has since played 51 times for the four-time European champions. He scored his first ever Toulouse try in that weekend win over Castres.
Trevor Brennan made 12 Test outings for Ireland between 1998 and 2001 but did not play for his country again after moving to Toulouse in 2002.
