Those travelling to England and Wales over the next month might already have guessed it, but this year’s Rugby World Cup has been confirmed as the most expensive major sporting event of all time.
The average ticket price for matches is a staggering £104.17, or €142, making it dearer than recent World Cups, Ryder Cups and even the London 2012 Olympic Games, and that is with prices adjusted for inflation!

Despite the financial pain involved in getting to the games, World Cup bosses can, however, point to impressive sales figures to justify the high prices, with just 50,000 of a total of 2.3million tickets still to be sold and many of those already purchased set to be resold for sums far above their face value.
The cheapest tickets available on one ticket reselling website for Ireland’s likely Pool D decider against France are €245, while highest-priced Category A seats are on sale for around €4,000.
