Sonny Bill Williams and Paul O’Connell could be Toulon teammates in 2016

Return to France

Patrick McCarry

There is not much Sonny Bill Williams has left to achieve in the rugby codes. Another crack at European rugby must rank highly on his list of goals.

The New Zealand centre is currently focusing his energies on trying to make Gordon Tetjens Sevens side for the 2016 Olympics.

Williams and fellow All Black Liam Messam are two of the high-profile Kiwis who fancy a crack at Olympic gold in Rio 2016.

Williams has not committed himself to any teams following next summer’s event but big-spending Toulon are chancing their arm.

The current Champions Cup holders already have the likes of Quade Cooper, Drew Mitchell, Paul O’Connell, Ma’a Nonu and Matt Giteau on their books.

Midi Olympique are reporting that Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal is sounding out the All Black for a deal in 2016/17.

Williams played two seasons for the French side – scoring six tries in 33 games – between 2008 and 2010. He then returned to New Zealand to win his first World Cup medal.

The newspaper has also linked Beauden Barrett, who scored the last try in the World Cup final victory, with a move to France.

The versatile back is out of contract, with hurricanes and the NZRU, in June.
