A French journalist relayed, to O'Brien, that many of Les Bleus had declared Ireland as favourites for the pool-topping encounter.
He replied, "They all say that? Well, I wouldn't buy into that. Of course they are going to say that.
"We are going to look into who are favourites or not. We'll look into how we will prepare ourselves so we'll be ready to go.
"We won't be worrying about who's favourites or who's not favourites."
O'Brien pointed out that although Ireland have a hex over France at present, he has tasted defeat to them enough times. Indeed, he was on the losing side against the French on three occasions in six months, back in 2011.
The flanker added, "This is different. This is a World Cup; a new season. All to play for.
