Rugby set to trial Hawk-Eye this month and it could be introduced before the World Cup

Changes ahead

Conan Doherty

Never let it be said that rugby will ever be left behind.

The sport is always making strides forward, always looking for ways to improve, always open to change.

And, come February 21, we’ll be seeing a new video review technology trial rolling out as the Pro 12 plays host to a Hawk-Eye feature.

The idea is to help with the accuracy of the current TMO structure whilst aiming to improve player welfare, too.

Selected matches of the remaining Guinness Pro 12 season as well as the World Rugby U20 Championship will all have Hawk-Eye availability and it is hoped that it can be put in place in time for the World Cup in England in September.

The protocol wouldn’t change, the match official’s questioning wouldn’t change, but the TMO will have access to more technology to enhance the decision-making or clarification process.

Hawk-Eye’s ‘SMART Replay’ is already being used by a number of sports including baseball, athletics, horseracing, football, badminton, volleyball and Aussie Rules. The technology works by recording all broadcast angles in real time and making this content available immediately.
