A player for the US Severac XV reserves side was put in a coma after being punched in the head on Sunday in a game against AS Maureilhan-Montady.
23-year-old Noha Loubety - a winger for the French amateur team - has undergone surgery for a bleed to the brain and a fractured skull.
According to the Irish Sun, the culprit has been arrested.
The French Rugby Federation (FFR) have commented on the incident, saying: "Given the seriousness of the facts, the Regional League’s disciplinary committee has been notified.
“In light of the information brought to its attention, the FFR has set up a support unit and has decided to become a civil party in the ongoing legal proceedings.”
US Severac XV said: “Rugby is a sport founded on respect, commitment, and brotherhood—values to which we are unwaveringly attached.
“We warmly thank the many clubs, players, supporters, and individuals for their messages of support, which demonstrate the unity of the rugby family during these difficult times.
“Today, all our thoughts and hopes are with Noha.
“We hope to be able to give you reassuring news very soon.”
The president of Severac-le-Chateuau, Joel Agullon, commented : “When we had to call the helicopter, we knew it was very serious.
“The player was taken away and what happened next frightens us. He is seriously injured.
“But it must, nevertheless, keep an eye on its players. This individual was uncontrollable.
“He committed a deliberate act and didn’t go after the bigger guys to take out his anger.
“No, he punched a smaller player. This player doesn’t belong on a rugby field.
“He shouldn’t be allowed to play anymore. He’s more of a boxer than a rugby player. Let him choose.”
