Ronan O’Gara’s pre-match comments have backfired spectacularly

It didn't take long for people to highlight this

There was always the potential that something like this could happen.

There are so many things that we like about Ronan O’Gara.

Besides being an absolute legend in terms of his performances over the years for both Munster and Ireland, the Corkonian is also someone who says it as it is and this couldn’t be more apt when it comes to his punditry work.

In the build up to Ireland’s disappointing loss to Scotland at Murrayfield, O’Gara let his feelings known when it came to the attitude of the Scotland camp ahead of the match.

Throughout the week, Scotland were talking up their chances of causing a major upset, in addition to this, Greg Laidlaw admitted that his side would target Conor Murray.

O’Gara clearly took issue with this.

O’Gara told RTÉ before kick-off: “I hope Ireland hammer Scotland today for the way they behaved in the week.

“Too mouthy, they can’t back it up. I was brought up with a mentality that you work hard and talk about it afterwards.”

Unfortunately for O’Gara, Ireland were on the losing side, and the Glasgow Warriors head coach, Gregor Townsend, couldn’t help himself when it came to highlighting O’Gara’s pre-match aspirations.

Townsend re-tweeted the quotes supplied by O’Gara and it adds another layer to the growing tensions between the two nations.
