VINE: Richie McCaw and Dan Carter set staggering Super Rugby records in their final games

Two bloody legends

Much like Paul O’Connell, McCaw has been somewhat coy about his departure from his beloved club.

The All Blacks captain has stated that this will, more likely than not, be his final season with the Crusaders. He insists he will not be tempted by a lucrative move to Europe, or Japan, and he will definitely finish with New Zealand after the World Cup.

It would not surprise us if he takes some time out but keeps his eye in with competitive rugby for Canterbury. He is just that crazy.

While much of the spotlight was on Dan Carter, who is off to Racing 92 [formerly Racing Métro] after the World Cup, McCaw simply went about doing his job in his final game with Crusaders.

Super Rugby’s greatest ever team have missed out on the play-offs this season but Carter and McCaw helped them to sign off from the 2015 with a comprehensive away win over the Brumbies.

Remarkably, the victory was McCaw’s 100th in 145 Super Rugby caps. He is the only player to ever win 100 Test and 100 Super Rugby matches.

McCaw was denied a farewell try, late in the match, by referee Jaco Peyper but he was pretty chuffed at the penalty try decision for his side.

That decision allowed Carter an easy conversion attempt. He chipped that over and ended his last Crusaders game with 17 points.

Carter signs off from the competition with 1,708 points from 140 matches, over 12 seasons. The closest active player to Carter is Quade Cooper [762] and he is off to Toulon next season.

His points tally is unlikely to be beaten for a long, long time… unless New Zealand produces another devastatingly amazing out-half.

What are the odds?

Here is the great tribute the Brumbies paid to the departing duo, and a couple of their own:
