REPORT: Wales dealt huge injury blow ahead of Rugby World Cup

Bad luck

Ben Kiely

It looks like Wales will have to compete in this year’s World Cup without one of their star players.

Reports in France suggest that Leigh Halfpenny has ruptured his knee ligaments and will be out for six months. L’Equipe say that the Welsh Rugby Union have informed Toulon that the full-back is expected to be out of action until March.

The former British & Irish Lions player fell awkwardly during last Saturday’s final warm-up match against Italy, which is how the damage was done. Halfpenny was clearly in pain after the fall and was subsequently stretchered off the field.

This is reportedly the same injury that Welsh centre Jonathan Davies was ruled out of the Rugby World Cup in May after suffering cruciate knee ligament damage.
