Peter O’Mahony whips up the most Irish breakfast possible on Lions tour

A man of simple pleasures...

James Haskell’s sterling public service continues in New Zealand.

Peter O’Mahony has had a time of it over the past 10 days. The Cork native went from a Test hopeful to captaining superbly against the Maori All Blacks and then being again handed the honour for the First Test against New Zealand.

It did not go the way of O’Mahony and his Lions teammates at Eden Park, last weekend, but there are still two Tests to be won.

The Munster man will be hoping to retain his blindside role and will need to prove himself all over again in training this week. It is a good thing, then, that he is fuelling up with a decent breakfast. It is a handy meal that so many Irish people will know all too well.

Haskell, O’Mahony’s Lions teammate, is chronicling just about every part of the 2017 Lions Tour. That includes breakfast time, with Rory Best catching up on Instagram or CJ Stander looking at pictures of hay bales:

Haskell took a seat with O’Mahony, on Monday morning, and loved his breakfast snack choice – bananas on toast buttered to each and every edge.

A fine, simple choice and we’ve rarely seen O’Mahony look happier…

O’Mahony takes his food and nutritional in-take just as seriously as any other part of his training and match-week preparations.

Former Munster nutritionist Dr Graeme Close [now with Everton FC] held nutrition sessions with the likes of O’Mahony and Conor Murray when they were academy players at the province and says both are great role models for others in the squad.

Like many of the Munster [and Lions] squad, his day would begin with a shake that usually includes porridge [or a handful of oats], fruit and yoghurt with some protein thrown in.

That’s a great start but you can’t go wrong with some bananas on toast afterwards.

Top, top work.
