More French players than Irish make Jeremy Guscott’s Six Nations team of the week

Only Johnny Sexton made the grade

After a frantic weekend of Six Nations action, and with a two week gap on the horizon, today is a day for taking stock and reviewing where everyone stands. It is also a day for picking ‘Teams of the Round’ so when the BBC posted one this morning we eagerly looked to see how many of Joe Schmidt’s side were in.

We nearly spat out our early morning matcha tea when we found out that Jeremy Guscott only picked Johnny Sexton from the Irish side. We were then even more surprised to see that two French players made the grade, Rory Kockott and Yoann Huget.

In fact, a quick scan of the team reveals that every country has more representatives than Ireland. Italy have three, despite getting hammered by England on Saturday. The victors in that match managed two. Scotland, also defeated, have two while Wales lead the way with five.

Now, we will freely admit that Ireland’s game against France was far from a spectacle, but we thought that the likes of Sean O’Brien, or Robbie Henshaw might have deserved the nod for their defensive work alone.

In fairness to Guscott he did name Sexton as his player of the week but it is still a strange selection. Here it is and if you want to have a read of the reasons, here’s the article.
