Luke Fitzgerald awaiting results of scan on injured shoulder

He misses out on Friday's match

Leinster are hopeful the in-form back will be available for their Champions Cup opener against Wasps.

The last thing Luke Fitzgerald needs now, or ever, is another spell on the sidelines.

The 28-year-old showed everybody just how lethal he could be in the backline as he fought the good fight against Argentina in the World Cup.

Fitzgerald was eager to take that form into Leinster’s season but he lasted less than half an hour in his provincial return, against Treviso, last Sunday.

Worryingly, Fitzgerald was nursing his shoulder. He had shoulder surgery in May before returning to full fitness for the World Cup.

Leinster coach Leo Cullen has confirmed that Fitzgerald will sit out this weekend’s Guinness PRO12 game with Scarlets. Cullen says Fitzgerald was sent for a scan based on his past injury profile rather than anything too concerning.

The coach is hoping to have Fitzgerald back for the November 15th home tie with Wasps.

The scan results are expected today so Fitzgerald, Leinster and their fans will all be hoping for the best.

Connacht have received a few fitness boosts ahead of their home tie with Treviso. Robbie Henshaw, who played three of Ireland’s World Cup games, is back in ‘full training’ and available for selection by Pat Lam.

Ronan Loughney, Shane Delahunt and John Cooney are also back in the selection mix.

A Connacht win and anything less than a bonus point victory for Scarlets – at Leinster – should see Connacht go top of the league.
