No-one was arguing with man of the match choice after Ireland beat USA

Racked up some serious numbers

Patrick McCarry

The personal stats are out of this world.

The United States are the 16th best team in world right now but in terms of rugby at the highest level, they are a whole universe away from the very top teams.

And so it was that a depleted Ireland side cruised to a 55-19 victory that would have been a whole lot more had Joey Carbery not misfired so badly with kicks from hand and tee.

Ireland handed out five debuts during their victory in New Jersey, with two of the new faces – Jacob Stockdale and James Ryan – touching down for tries.

There was little argument about the official man-of-the-match too.

While Leinster back-row Jack Conan had a phenomenal game at the back of the Irish pack, Keith Earls was far and away the best player on show.

Earls’ numbers were nothing short of ridiculous – he carried 12 times for 218 metres gained, had nine line breaks and blazed past seven defenders with ball in hand. In the first half alone, his seven carries gained Ireland 192 metres and led to four tries [two for himself and two assists].

The impressive Tiernan O’Halloran teamed up with Earls for his first try:

With Kieran Marmion heavily involved in the build-up to Earls’ second – his 22nd for Ireland.

Ireland head on to Japan later today and their next game will be at 6:30am [Irish time] on Saturday.
