It seems as though every position in the Ireland rugby team is up for debate, and the two centres are no different.
This month’s November series is extremely important for Joe Schmidt’s charges as they face into 2019, a year that will see them trying to put together back-to-back Grand Slam wins for the first time every, as well as the little matter of the World Cup in Japan.
At the minute Ireland have strength in depth all over the park.
The big problem that comes with having so much depth in the squad is that it becomes really hard to leave people out of the 15.
The centre partnership is another area that is wide open considering the form that some individuals have shown recently.
Jenny Murphy was our guest on episode four of Baz and Andrew’s House of Rugby and the former women’s international sees the battle coming down to who will partner Robbie Henshaw in the 13 channel.
“I thought they did really well, especially in the second half when we got quicker ruck ball and we could get it out there and do a little bit more.
“I thought Ringrose in particular linked really well. He did what you want a 13 to do, he kind of baited, then created space outside and inside of him. He just looks really good with ball in hand, and again a highly skilful player.Â
“But i’d say that Henshaw is getting that 12, and it’s the 13 jersey that’s probably more of a battle, and for me at the moment I think Ringrose probably gets it.Â
“Aki had a good game, and again you’ve got Addison who can slot in there too. There’s maybe not as much of a battle as there is in the loose forwards, but there’s still huge depth there, and like it’s a nice problem to have.”
Co-host and former Ulster player Andrew Trimble highlighted that although many may see Bundee Aki as a second choice centre, his inclusion brings absolutely no drop in quality. He also highlighted fellow Ulster men Will Addison and Stuart McCloskey who have been in tantalising form this year, but will probably miss out when push comes to shove.
“Yeah, I think he’s been really good for Ulster this season. The thing is he can contribute at full back and 13. Yeah he’s definitely in the picture as well when talking about centre partnerships.” Trimble said.Â
“It’s crazy when talking about the impact Bundee Aki made last year, played every game in the Grand Slam, huge contribution and it’s crazy he’s kind of considered second choice.Â
“But if anybody picks up a knock, Bundee Aki goes in there no problem at all. There’s no drop off in quality really, I think the only thing is just that the lads have established more trust or established a longer series of delivering for Joe maybe.Â
“Then it’s mad again, so many centres in the conversation and Stuart McCloskey, who’s probably been Ulster’s best player this season. He’s not even being talked about. That’s how good the standard is.”
