Ireland to receive world rankings jolt on Monday

Patrick McCarry

Back on March 19, Ireland achieved their highest points return since the world rankings system was introduced.

Having defeated England to claim the 2018 Grand Slam, Ireland were also on a 12-game winning streak and second in the world rankings.

That run saw Joe Schmidt’s side reach 89.11 points and they were closing in on New Zealand [93.99].

Following that comprehensive victory at Twickenham, we noted:

‘Ireland are set to face the All Blacks in Dublin in November of this year and the tie could well be for rugby’s No.1 spot if the men in green have a prosperous summer tour Down Under.

‘Australia will entertain the Irish in three Test matches, this June. Winning the Test Series 3-0 would see Ireland amass at least 3 more world ranking points and put them within touching distance of New Zealand.’

The Kiwis walloped France 52-11 at Eden Park but, as they were hosts and France are down in seventh, their ranking points will not change come Monday when World Rugby officially confirm the numbers.

Ireland will take a hit, however. The men in green lose 1.06 points for their 18-9 defeat to Australia. Michael Cheika’s side, on the other hand, pick up 1.06 points for getting off to a winning start. All told, that is a swing of 2.12 points and they are in striking distance of Ireland.

Australia are up to third after their win and England’s 42-39 loss to Rassie Erasmus’ South Africa, while Wales are not far off Eddie Jones’ side now after beating Argentina.

Another Wallabies win in Melbourne next week would see them replace Ireland as second in the world.

Instead of looking up and targeting the ABs, we are now glancing back at the chasing pack. Another reason, as if they need it, for Ireland to avenge their Brisbane defeat next weekend.
