Ireland Women captured their second Six Nations championship in two years after sweeping Scotland to one side at Broadwood Stadium today.
Tom Tierney’s side, who won the Grand Slam in 2013, entered today’s match, in Clyde, knowing they needed to beat their hosts by 27 points to claim the title.
Ireland captain Niamh Briggs settled early nerves with a try and her team-mates responded to the clarion call in style. Heather O’Brien and Claire Molloy touched down and Briggs’ penalty made it 30-3 after 33 minutes.
By the time Alison Miller beat five Scottish players crossed for this wonder score, the deficit had been obliterated.
Ireland went on to add further scores in the second-half and coast to victory. The penultimate try of the game was a Tania Rosser snipe over in the corner, which Briggs converted.
Fittingly, Miller got over for her hat-trick and Jenny Murphy scored a superb, sprinting try to make it 73-3 and seal a superb weekend for Irish rugby.
The championship comes less than a day after the Irish men retained their Six Nations crown at Murrayfield.
