It’s hard to argue with the lack of Irish representation
The Six Nations Teams of the Week have been dropping this morning and to nobody’s huge surprise there is a distinct red flavour to them.
Wales’ defensive masterclass against Ireland in Cardiff threw open the Championship race and earned the hosts the lion’s share of the places in all reasoned combined selections.
We say reasoned because, of course, there’s always Jeremy Guscott. The former England star saw fit to reward the heroic Welsh performance with just five spots in his team for the BBC, instead handing six places to England for their wasteful display in victory against the Scots.
In his defence, one Welsh omission may be the result of his desire to praise Scotland full-back Stuart Hogg for his superb outing, although if he’d played on the wing at Twickenham he would not have been in position to make any of the positive interventions he made on Scotland’s behalf.
The Telegraph, however, did see fit to give Wales the biggest slice of the Team of the Week cake, with seven spots going to Warren Gatland’s charges and just four to those wearing the red rose. In fact, the teams share just seven players, and we have to say we are far happier with the latter’s selection.
