Good news for Ireland and Leinster concerning Johnny Sexton

Much-needed

Sean McMahon

Some good injury news at last.

As the 2016 rugby calendar draws to a close, one of the main issues which has been dominating headlines is the plethora of injuries suffered by Connacht in recent weeks.

The Western province has released a statement outlining updates on 22 players which are currently sidelined through injury.

For the other provinces, they can certainly count themselves lucky they are not going through such a crisis that their western neighbours are currently suffering through.

Yet they have their own concerns in key positions all the same. One of which is the out-half position at Leinster.

Both Johnny Sexton and Joey Carbery are currently out-of-action.

Sexton’s injury is an interesting one. He hasn’t taken the field since he exited the fray in Ireland’s bruising defeat to the All Blacks at the Aviva Stadium, almost six weeks ago.

Any update on his injury since then, be it from Leo Cullen or David Nucifora has been low on detail – mostly stating that he is currently rehabilitating his hamstring injury at the Santry Sports Clinic.

Thankfully, a more positive update, yet vague all the same, has been issued relating to Sexton’s injury.

It has been revealed that Sexton will be “reintroduced to the rugby programme this week.”

What the definition of “rugby programme” is, remains to be seen. However, photos from Leinster’s training session shows the 31-year-old involved in some capacity at least.

What can be said though is that this is good news nonetheless for Leinster and Ireland.

RTE report that a decision on Sexton and Rob Kearney’s participation in the December 31 game against Ulster will be made later in the week.

Ireland kick off their Six Nations campaign in just a couple of weeks time so it is imperative that Sexton gets back up to speed as soon as possible.
