George North ‘unlikely’ to play for Northampton at the weekend

The winger will remain with the Wales squad as he recovers from knocks to the head he took against England

Another weekend off the pitch for North

After sitting out last week’s game with Scotland, a decision that Warren Gatland said George North wasn’t happy about, the winger will also be kicking his heels this weekend.

As the Six Nations takes a break this weekend, countries have been letting some players return to their clubs for some extra game time, or in the case of the French-based players, they are obliged to let them go.

However, North won’t be getting a run out for his club Northampton. The Saints play Bath on Saturday but their forward coach Dorian West has said to the BBC that North is ‘unlikely’ to be involved.

“It’s still up in the air where he is with fitness so it’ll be unlikely that he’s involved with us,” he said.

“He obviously had a couple of bangs on his head and Wales need to make sure that they are doing the right thing with him for his long term health, so it’s in their hand to make sure he gets back to full fitness.”

As for when North will play again after the nasty pair of blows to the head he took against England in the opening round of the Six Nations, West said:  “We’ll see what their [Wales] selection brings next week. Hopefully he’ll be playing for Wales, but we’ll see.”

Wales face France in Paris on February 28.
