‘His fists were the size of sledgehammers and everyone would run when he got angry’

Jack O'Toole

Former Leinster prop Stan Wright used to startle his teammates with his anger according to former club captain Kevin McLaughlin.

McLaughlin was appearing on the latest episode of The Hard Yards to disucss the fourth round of the Six Nations when he was asked ‘who was the king of the dig’ at Leinster during his playing career.

The pnael had been discussing Bismarck du Plessis’ warm-up fight with teammate Mohamed Haouas before Montpellier’s 41-3 victory over Racing last weekend and McLaughlin revealed that Wright and Mike McCarthy could get quite physical at training.

“There was a few people over the years,” said McLaughlin.

“Stan Wright was one who got quite heated at training and everyone would just run when he got angry because his fists were the size of sledgehammers.

“Mike McCarthy would be fond of a wrestle but I think he’d be just doing it for the craic.

“You’d be in a mauling session and you’d be like ‘where’s Macca?’ And he’d be wrestling and have some poor academy kid in a headlock on the ground.”

“That was always another one; target the young lads,” added former Leinster and Munster centre James Downey.

“If someone was angry you’d ask ‘where’s the academy guy? But if the academy guy threw a dig back you’d be like fair play.”

Downey and McLaughlin also broke down Ireland’s win over Scotland, the best way England can approach Ireland’s Grand Slam decider and Ireland’s defensive weaknesses.
